En el sistema reformado de A level, el AS representa la primera etapa de las dos en que se divide el programa de A level, ver A level. El AS tiene lugar en el penúltimo año de la enseñanza secundaria. Los estudiantes se examinan en más asignaturas para un AS level que para un A2, adquiriendo, de esta manera, una educación más amplia antes de especializarse en las asignaturas que seleccionan para estudiar en la enseñanza superior.
